7 Tips for Creating an Engaging Online Environment

It's the start of a new year, and we are all looking to start the year off right. A goal of many teachers is to increase student engagement even if the class is offered online. However, this usually means using different methods than those that are used in a traditional classroom. Today I will share with you some tips for creating a more engaging online environment. As you are in the process of planning and setting up new courses, please find some time to incorporate some of these tips into your online courses.

1. Introduce your course with an exciting and unique "Welcome" message using video and/or other form of online presentation tool.

2. Conduct ice breaker activities such as having the students introduce themselves or other activities such as 2 Truths and a Lie.

3. Use a variety of media to promote standards and learning concepts, and in discussions too. The media can include word documents, PDFs, movies, music, web site links, videos, images, and more.

4. Create a Frequently Asked Questions link or area that could include How-To printables and video tutorials.

5. Make regular comments on your students work and remember to be positive and detailed.

6. Respond to and participate in discussion postings regularly.

7. Try your best to respond to all student queries within 24 hours or less.
